Green Birdflower is a unique and fascinating plant native to Australia.

🕊️ Origin of name: The seeds make a rattling sound, hence the name Crotalaria after the Greek word for "rattle" and cunninghamii after Allan Cunningham, an early 19th century botanist.
📍Range: Australia - Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria.

🪴 Form and Characteristics: A perennial shrub reaching 1-3 metres in height, it is known for its striking green flowers which closely resemble small birds in flight. The downy, silver-coloured leaves hold jewel-green flowers that sparkle in the sunlight, making them a completely natural work of art. These intricate flowers are clustered along the stems, providing a stunning visual treat. This plant usually blooms in the warmer months and attracts a variety of pollinators, including birds and insects.

⚜️ Uses: It can be used as a house decoration or processed into fibre to make rope and fish nets, and was used by Aboriginal Australians to make sandals, canvas and even paper pulp. The heated or boiled leaves are used to relieve eye infections and the bark is used to relieve swollen limbs. It's also a good green manure, absorbing nitrogen from the air to enrich the soil, making it the perfect plant.

🌳 Habitat: Green Birdflower grows in sandy soils in scrub, grassland or savannah woodlands in semi-arid to temperate regions. It thrives in well-drained sandy soils and is very tolerant of drought conditions, making it an excellent choice for landscaping and low-maintenance gardens.

🌱 Planting Guide:Green Birdflower reproduces by seed or cuttings, seeds are more likely to germinate when treated with warm water. After it has passed the seedling stage, it is planted in ordinary culture soil in a sunny place, and a long wait follows. It flowers in winter, is very resistant to wind and rain, and is heat and cold tolerant, so it is ideal for warmer winter places.
